Statement from U.S. Rep. Schwartz on White House Healthcare Summit

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz (PA-13) was among the invited guests at today’s White House summit on healthcare. Schwartz is a member of the Ways and Means Committee, Vice Chair of the Budget Committee, and a Vice Chair of the centrist New Democratic Coalition. In addition, Schwartz co-chairs the New Dems Taskforce on Healthcare.

Schwartz released the following statement following the healthcare summit.

“The cost of healthcare to our families, businesses and our government is unsustainable. It is our shared responsibility to contain these costs and ensure that health coverage in America is accessible, affordable and meaningful.

“For all Americans to have access to affordable, quality healthcare, we need a uniquely American solution. Expanded access to coverage, increased use of innovation and technology, incentives for effective delivery systems, and a renewed commitment to preventive efforts are all key to reform.

“The time for healthcare reform is now. Our economic competiveness depends on it, and demand from the public and private sector has never been greater for reform. From families to businesses to government at all levels, we all understand that we cannot sustain the status quo of our current system.‬‪

“I want to applaud President Obama for initiating this important debate with all stakeholders. For reform to succeed there must be an active, engaged debate by all stakeholders – the American public, Republicans and Democrats, doctors, nurses, businesses, hospitals, unions, insurance companies, and advocacy organizations.‬

“President Obama and Congress have already achieved tremendous progress in strengthening healthcare in America. I am confident we will move forward on additional measures this year bringing us closer to ensuring that all Americans have access to affordable, quality healthcare.”‬
