Washington, D.C. - Earlier today, U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz was named Vice Chair of the House Budget Committee. The Budget Committee’s jurisdiction includes oversight of the federal budget process, including the drafting of the annual budget resolution.
As Vice Chair, Rep. Schwartz will work closely with Chairman Spratt, House Leadership and the new Administration in crafting a budget that addresses the needs of the nation. Schwartz is now serving in her third term on the Committee, having been appointed as a freshman member of Congress in 2005.
“With America facing one of the worst economic moments in her history, coupled with the reality of a possible $1.9 trillion deficit this year, I take incredibly seriously my work on the House Budget Committee. It is an honor to have been named Vice Chair. I look forward to working with my Chairman, Chairman Spratt, and my Budget colleagues in ensuring that we move America forward on a path of fiscal responsibility, with our eye always on the legacy we will leave our children and grandchildren,” said U.S. Rep. Schwartz. “At a time when our nation is plagued with budget challenges, we are fortunate that Allyson Schwartz will be playing a leadership role on the Budget Committee as its Vice Chair. Allyson shares a commitment to the twin goals of economic recovery in the short term and a budget back on track over the long term. I look forward to working with her,” said House Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt.
Former Majority Whip and past House Budget Committee Chairman Bill Gray expressed strong praise for Schwartz and her new role. Mr. Gray and Congresswoman Schwartz have known each other for over 20 years.
“This is a wonderful recognition of Congresswoman Schwartz’s leadership and her abilities. Her seats on the Budget Committee and Ways and Means show that she will be a pivotal player in the coming Congress as the nation deals with the economic stimulus, the huge national deficit, and what the priorities should be,” said former Congressman Gray.
