ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2010 Rep. Allyson Schwartz will host a Veterans Leadership Council Meeting at her Philadelphia office to talk about her work in Congress on veteran’s issues and to hear from local veterans.
Schwartz established her Veterans Leadership Council in September 2005 to have an opportunity to hear directly from local veterans and veterans’ advocates. Schwartz and the Council meet frequently to discuss key topics affecting America’s veterans. At tomorrow’s meeting, Schwartz will provide an update on recent action Congress has taken to help America’s veterans and to take questions.
As one of the leading supporters of veterans in Congress, Schwartz successfully got signed into law a bill to help ease the financial burden on our soldiers and their families by providing tax credits to businesses that hire soldiers returning from Iraq or Afghanistan. The Veterans Employment and Respect Act is a vital tool to ensure that our veterans have economic opportunities available to them when they return from service.
Schwartz has led efforts in Congress to end critical Veterans Administration funding shortfalls, enhance VA health care services and improve veterans’ access to critical benefits. She has also advocated expanding veterans’ eligibility to benefit from the first-time home buyer tax credit and has championed efforts to support greater education and economic opportunities for veterans and service members.
In addition to addressing the needs of America’s service men and women, Schwartz has worked in a bipartisan manner to more closely analyze the needs of the family while military personnel are deployed to ensure these families have the tools they need for transition when loved ones return home.
