SCHWARTZ STATEMENT AT FOREIGN AFFAIRS HEARING ON LIBYA

Washington, D.C. –U.S. Rep Allyson Schwartz delivered the following statement today at a House Foreign Affairs Committee Hearing on the situation in Libya.

“First, I would like to acknowledge the members of our armed forces, who once again have stepped into harm’s way, this time as part of an international coalition to prevent the Qaddafi regime from massacring Libyan citizens seeking democratic and human rights.

“President Obama has emphasized that the military mission in response to the potential humanitarian crisis be both limited and has the support of a broad international coalition, including the endorsement of the United Nations, NATO, the Arab League and African Union. The President has upheld this pledge by successfully handing-off command and control to the NATO-led coalition.

“The fact that the call to action came from a broad international coalition has been critical. There is clear regional and international agreement on the use of military force to protect civilians and this coalition leadership ensures we do not assume sole responsibility for operations and costs.

“In addition to military involvement, the United States has applied strong diplomatic and economic pressure against Qaddafi, his family, and close associates, including economic sanctions, a travel ban, and a freeze on more than $30 billion in Libyan assets. Colonel Qaddafi is more and more isolated, and his military capabilities have been seriously degraded.  However, the outcome of our intervention is uncertain.

“I share the concern of so many Americans about the weeks ahead - the concern about escalation of our intervention, as well as the costs of continued or increased involvement.”
