SCHWARTZ NAMED TO MIDDLE EAST AND TRADE SUBCOMMITTEES

Washington, D.C. – As a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, U.S. Rep Allyson Schwartz will sit on two important subcommittees: the Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia and the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade.

The Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia is one of five regional subcommittees, and it has jurisdiction over the political relations between the United States and one of the most volatile and important areas of interest for the U.S.  Since the 109th Congress, Schwartz has served as a member of the bipartisan House Democracy Assistance Partnership (HDAP).  Schwartz will apply her experience with this select group as she works to build and strengthen relations between the U.S. and the various nations under the jurisdiction of the subcommittee.

“Recent events have demonstrated the powerful aspirations of people across the region for democracy and economic development,” Schwartz said.  “I look forward to working with the subcommittee to foster stronger relations across the region and to promote the formation of a stable democracy and civil society.”

Schwartz has also vigorously pursued policies designed to strengthen Congress’ bipartisan support for the State of Israel and is a member of the Democratic Israel Working Group and the U.S.-Israel Security Caucus.

The Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade has jurisdiction over issues involving terrorism and nonconventional threats, oversight of nonproliferation efforts involving nuclear, chemical, or biological threats, and the international trade and commerce policies of the United States.

“In the 21st century, we face both global opportunities and global threats,” Schwartz said.  “I believe that we cannot retreat from globalization, but we must ensure that there is a level playing field for American businesses and workers.  This subcommittee plays a crucial role in securing our nation and in creating jobs and economic opportunity at home.”
