SCHWARTZ STATEMENT ON PROPOSED METHADONE CLINIC IN NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz issued the following statement expressing her opposition to the proposed methadone clinic at 7908 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia PA.

“On behalf of my constituents in Northeast Philadelphia, I express my strong opposition to the plans for the development of a methadone clinic at 7908 Frankford Avenue. While I believe in the importance of rehabilitation services for those who have fallen into the cycle of substance abuse and addiction, this community and the surrounding areas are already served by similar facilities. We cannot risk the detrimental impact on economic development, public safety, and quality of life associated with the presence of a clinic at this location.

“Northeast Philadelphia is a vibrant residential and commercial community with a diverse population, including vulnerable seniors and school children. This densely residential neighborhood includes four schools, a highly utilized public library and children’s recreational facilities. As you know, recovery is an uphill battle for those suffering from heroin addiction and high relapse rates are an unfortunate reality of the recovery process. Local parents have expressed fears about the threat to their children’s safety presented by criminal activity associated with drug use.

“While the safety of our community is paramount, we must also consider the economic implications of locating such a facility in a neighborhood already facing challenges as a result of the recession. The area surrounding Frankford Avenue is home to numerous small businesses that draw customers from outside the immediate area and keep our local economy afloat. The presence of such a facility would severely damage the perception of the neighborhood and its ability to attract and retain commercial activity.

“I share the serious concerns expressed by the civic associations and residents throughout Northeast Philadelphia who have mobilized against the proposed clinic. Moving forward with this plan would be a step in the wrong direction for our community.”
