SCHWARTZ SECURES FUNDS FOR LANSDALE STREETSCAPE PROJECT

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz joined Lansdale Borough Officials today at a ground breaking ceremony to launch the Main, Broad and Madison streets streetscape project. Schwartz helped secure $2.36 million for the project, which will pave the way for Lansdale’s economic development efforts, while strengthening its unique identity and character.

The project will feature enhancements along Main Street from Richardson Avenue up to Broad Street in addition to Madison Street. Features of the streetscape project include the replacement of deteriorating curbing and sidewalks and the addition of new street trees and street lamps, which are both aesthetically and environmentally appealing.

All aspects of the project were carefully considered to create an environment where walking is safe and convenient for residents, visitors and commuters.  The streetscape project provides both form and function by creating a pedestrian friendly environment while stimulating economic growth in downtown Lansdale.

“Improving neighborhoods in Pennsylvania and across the country by making areas greener, safer, and more livable has long been a goal of mine,” Schwartz said. “This grant will enhance the quality of life for Lansdale residents and visitors by creating a safer environment for pedestrians and vehicular traffic and will provide more economic opportunity for the downtown area.”

“This project emphasizes how important of a role our core downtown area plays, serving as the springboard for borough-wide transformation,” said Council President Matthew D. West.  “A refreshed and updated look to our downtown will signal to residents and visitors alike that Lansdale is open for business.”

Funding for the $3.2 million project was acquired through multiple federal and state grants. Schwartz secured funding to improve pedestrian safety, enhance Transit Oriented Development and provide a uniform downtown area.  Funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is also being utilized to buffer pedestrian areas from moving vehicular traffic.

Lansdale Borough will be supplying updates on their website including project schedule, road closures, photo gallery and email link to receive information electronically. Additionally Borough Engineers Remington, Vernick & Beach will be providing a live webcam view of the project real time.

“We pledge to keep the downtown businesses and Lansdale residents fully informed on the progress of this project,” said Borough Manager Timothea M. Kirchner.
