Reps. Brady, Fattah, Schwartz: SEPTA To Get $62.8 Million for Economic Recovery

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representatives Bob Brady, Chaka Fattah and Allyson Schwartz (D-PA) announced today that SEPTA will receive more than $62 million under President Obama’s economic recovery program for capital improvement programs across the five-county transit system.

The grant of $62,891,181 was released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. According to the Philadelphia Congressional delegation, SEPTA will buy 40 replacement hybrid-electric buses, improve high speed rail line stations, infrastructure and safety features, design renovations for Tulpehocken, Fox Chase, North Wales and Elwyn stations, along with other improvements.

Congressman Bob Brady (D-PA-01) said: “This is another solid example of how the economic recovery funding is being directed to our region. This DOT funding not only helps to upgrade our regional transportation system, it also is a solid boost to our overall economy.”

Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA-02) said: “SEPTA is the lifeblood of the Philadelphia region and now it is receiving a large and needed boost of resources under the President’s national recovery program. Improving SEPTA puts people to work, then an improved SEPTA gets people to work. This grant means high-leverage dollars.”

Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz (D-PA-13) said: “Today’s announcement is a tremendous win for southeastern Pennsylvania. This funding will ensure that SEPTA can make vital improvements and upgrades such as renovations to North Wales and Fox Chase Stations, and is just the latest example of the difference that the economic recovery act is making throughout the United States and here locally.”
