| Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Allyson Y. Schwartz announced that seven local high students from Montgomery County and Northeast Philadelphia have received offers of appointment to America’s military academies.
“As the daughter of a Korean War veteran, I was honored to have had the opportunity to nominate such talented and patriotic students to our military academies. We should all applaud the willingness and dedication of these young men and women to serve our country,” said Rep. Schwartz.
Congresswoman Schwartz formally announced the offer of the appointments during a reception held April 18 in honor of the students. During the reception she presented each student with a proclamation congratulating them on their appointment offer, as well as an American flag. The following students from the 13th Congressional District received offers of appointment.
MATLACK GILLIN – UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY
Springfield Township senior Matlack Gillin, of Oreland, has received an offer of an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. In the top 10% of his graduating class with a 3.926, Matlack is also actively involved in high school sports. He has participated in five sports, including track and cross country. Active in his high school as a peer helper, Matlack has helped younger students work through their academic and social difficulties.
JUDE COOKE – UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY
Father Judge High School senior Jude Cooke, of Northeast Philadelphia, has received an offer of an appointment to West Point. One of three triplets, Jude currently ranks in the top 12% of his graduating class and maintains a perfect 4.0 grade point average. In an evaluation done by the military academy, Jude scored the highest amount of possible points in categories such as potential leadership, communication skills, and presentation. Many Division I schools expressed interest in Jude, an offensive lineman at Father Judge.
ANDREW KIM – UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACADEMY
Upper Dublin High School senior Andrew Kim, of Dresher, received an offer of an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. An inducted member of the National Honor Society, Andrew has a 3.889 grade point average and an SAT score of 1190. Andrew has been involved in numerous clubs and sporting activities, including student government association, the Asian student association, marching band, lacrosse, winter track, sophisticated string ensemble, and the wrestling team. Andrew is also actively involved in his community as a dedicated member of the Holy Angels Parish.
JESSICA JOHNSON – UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY
Calvary Christian Academy senior Jessica Johnson, of Huntingdon Valley, is currently ranked number one in her graduating class. Jessica has received an offer of an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. With a 4.254 grade point average and a 1330 SAT score, Jessica already has first-hand experience with college, having completed pre-calculus and chemistry at the University of Delaware, and now taking two engineering courses at Penn State. She plays three instruments in her school’s concert and jazz bands, has been nominated as a Who’s Who among American high school students, tutors math for elementary students and volunteers with her church youth group. A member of the Civil Air Patrol, Jessica is currently a cadet lieutenant and has received various honors such as the 2003 Squadron 902 Cadet of the Year and the 2005 Good Citizenship Award.
HARRY DAVIES – UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY
Holy Ghost Preparatory High School senior Harry Davies, of Northeast Philadelphia, has received an offer of an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Harry has received the highest scholarship award at his high school, the Presidential Scholarship of Holy Ghost Preparatory School. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Mathletes, Student Government Executive Board, and the Peer Ministry. Harry also participates in lacrosse, bowling, and football.
DANIEL MELORO – UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY
Germantown Academy senior Daniel Meloro, of Harleysville, has received an offer of an appointment to West Point. An AP scholar, Daniel is also a talented athlete who participated in football and wrestling. Daniel’s impressive scholastic record, with a 1570 on the SAT, enabled him to be awarded an offer of appointment early in the selection process. Daniel was also nominated to the Academy by Senator Santorum.
PHILIP GREENE – UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY
Germantown Academy senior Philip Greene, of Blue Bell, has received an offer of an appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. In addition to maintaining excellent grades, Philip is ranked third in wrestling out of the nation’s high school students. Philip was also offered an appointment to West Point, but chose instead to attend the Merchant Marine Academy.
