| WASHINGTON - Representative Allyson Y. Schwartz was reappointed to the House Democracy Assistance Commission (HDAC) for the 110th Congress. The 20-Member bi-partisan Commission’s purpose is to strengthen democratic institutions by assisting legislatures in emerging democracies throughout the world.
“I am honored to serve on the Commission,” said Rep. Schwartz. “The establishment of strong, independent democratic institutions is vital to the promotion of democracy and stability throughout the world, and the House Democracy Assistance Commission is an important component of advancing this objective.”
HDAC serves as a model of bipartisan cooperation to promote a common goal among Members of the House, and promote a positive image of the United States abroad. Central to HDAC’s work is providing procedural, technical, and material assistance to legislatures and their members in developing democracies around the world. Drawing on the experience of the U.S. Congress, the Commission provides unique peer-to-peer, legislature-to-legislature assistance.
Currently, the Commission is implementing programs for legislatures in twelve nations: Afghanistan, Colombia, East Timor, Georgia, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Lebanon, Liberia, Macedonia, Mongolia, and Ukraine.
“As we confront the global security challenges of the 21st century, it is clear that initiatives such as the House Democracy Assistance Commission are of the utmost importance, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on this effort.”
