Schwartz Statement on State Charges Against former Green Lane Marlborough Authority Plant Operator

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz issued the following statement regarding the May 28, 2010 Philadelphia Inquirer article, “Montco Plant Operator Charged with Discharging Raw Sewage.”

“Earlier this year the Green Lane Marlborough Joint Authority asked for my help in pursuing federal assistance to repair and fix its municipal treatment plant in order to correct problems that were caused by a plant operator that had been fired in September 2009. Like others, I am outraged by the fired plant operator’s behavior.

I submitted this request to the House Appropriations Committee on March 22, 2010, after receiving assurances from the Authority and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection that a new operator and governing body had been put into place to fix the problems.

The funding that I’ve requested will help the Authority fix the problems that currently exist in the plant as a result of the former operator’s gross negligence. These funds will also be used to protect the environment, and help mitigate any potential rate increases Green Lane residents might see as a result of the expenses needed to fix the facility.

Although I have submitted this project to the House Appropriations Committee, this is not a guarantee that it will be funded. I will continue to work with local elected officials to address the community’s infrastructure needs.”
