| Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representative Allyson Y. Schwartz released the following statement concerning the Administration’s approval of the management of U.S. ports to be sold to Dubai Ports World, a state-owned company.
“Given the undisputed fact that we are fighting a global war on terror, it is simply stunning that the President of the United States sees nothing wrong with allowing Dubai Ports World, a company owned by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to manage vital U.S. ports. The President claims there is no difference between the British company currently managing these ports and the UAE controlled company, but he is wrong. There is a clear difference – while the British stand with us in the war on terror, two UAE companies assisted in the sale of nuclear technology to Iran, Libya and North Korea.
“There is strong agreement from Republicans and Democrats alike that this is not a company who should be managing what comes in and out of U.S. port cities and that this deal puts American security interests at risk.
“With just five percent of all cargo currently being inspected, the Bush Administration has repeatedly failed the American people by not providing the needed support to keep our ports secure. The Administration’s closed-door deal with Dubai Ports World clearly demonstrates that they place the economic benefit of a select few above the security interests of the American people.
“Congress has a responsibility to act. We must demand that this deal be stopped, and that the Administration finally get serious about the security of our ports.”
