Statement by U.S. Representative Schwartz

on House Republican Budget Vote

Washington, D.C. U.S. Representative Allyson Y. Schwartz, a member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement regarding the Republican’s budget bill, which passed today by only two votes, 216 to 214.

Rep. Schwartz’s statement follows below.

“Today’s vote is a cruel setback for the families of Northeast Philadelphia and Montgomery County. As a member of the House Budget Committee, I fought every step of the way to stop the Republican budget from being enacted, and I am greatly disappointed that it passed by a mere two votes.

“Rather than reach across the aisle to put forth a fiscally responsible budget that addresses the concerns of ordinary families – health care, higher education, skyrocketing energy prices – Republicans turned their back on middle class families once again. This vote hurts families not just now, but Americans will be forced to pay the price for today’s vote years into the future.

“Students will pay the price – this bill slashed $12.7 billion from student loan programs, putting higher education out of reach for countless young people. Children will pay the price –this budget cuts funding for child support enforcement, resulting in an expected loss of $2.9 billion that will not be collected from deadbeat parents. Seniors will pay the price – this bill makes it harder for the neediest seniors to get the health care and prescription drugs that they need.

“And we will all pay the price with the higher deficits created by this bill.

“Only one day into the second session of the 109th Congress, Republicans have made it perfectly clear that their agenda puts special interests first, leaving American families behind. “
