Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Allyson Schwartz (PA-13) announced today that 50 new officers will be added to the City of Philadelphia’s police force through stimulus funding provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
“This new funding will increase the number of officers patrolling the streets,” Rep. Schwartz said. “Their presence will help make our community stronger and safer. Every day these brave men and women risk their lives to protect our great City. Giving them the resources that they need is the least that we can do to express our gratitude.”
The $10.9 million that will pay for 100 percent of the officers’ salary and benefits for three years comes from stimulus funding passed by Congress earlier this year through the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPs) Program. Created in 1994 the COPS grants program was an enormously successful, popular program – helping local law enforcement agencies to hire more than 117,000 additional police officers, in every state in the union, from 1995 to 2005.
Earlier this year, Rep. Schwartz also announced $13.5 million in stimulus funding for the Philadelphia Police through the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program, which helps local law enforcement invest in crime-controlling technologies.
